Frequently Asked Questions

Where did your name come from, and what does it mean?

We’re not trying to be tricky with this one…honest. But the truth is, there is the real story of where the name came from, which we will probably tell you if you take the time to ask us. That’s the price of admission. But that’s not all — the meaning of the name has changed over time and with the times. One thing that will never change is, it’s a pretty powerful name and presence. That’s why we don’t need much fanfare with it — it sort of stands on its own in a room. Not to gloat, but our network is sort of powerful too — we hope it bares resemblance.

Where is IB5k based?

These times call for a decentralized footing. While no one place serves all of our needs, many do an awesome job at what they do best. In particular, we have IB5k staff members placed strategically in the major media centers in the United States. Our administrative base, as well as our innovative video, is concentrated in San Francisco, our 24-hour news desk is centered in Chicago, our nonprofit and governmental work is managed by a team in Washington, DC, our original series and commercial work is spearheaded in Los Angeles, and our legal and network distribution comes out of New York. Did we also mention we have that worldwide network?

What’s so special about IB5k?

Well a couple of things. Right off the bat, we generally point to our network. We’ve been working on building this thing with actual people for a long time now.

Next, we all have a unique amount of experience in sucessful ventures in a space called New Media. It’s sort of hard to have a lot of experience in this space. There’s a whole generation of folks who know what they’re doing in the legacy worlds which are now crumbling around them and then there’s a whole crop of really smart young ones who haven’t quite left school yet. We fall in the crack right in the middle. We understand the old way of doing business and we respect it — we’ve worked there. We also appreciate and embrace the New world — we’ve got to grow old with that, so we’ve figured out a few tricks that work along the way.

Finally, we’re good people. Everyone who works here is trying to do a good job and quite honestly, make the world a better place. They wouldn’t work here if they didn’t. We also want to make your world in particular a better place. I’m positively certain if you talk or communicate with anyone at IB5k, that’s the thing you’re noticing on the other end.

Who are your producers specifically and when do I get to meet them?

I es lately, UGC has gotten a bad rap. In the other ones, the bad word hasn’t gotten there yet becuase so many places have either been cheating or drastically taking advantage of honest hard working people who just haven’t gotten their big break yet. IB5k, in many respects is a reaction to the UGC concept. Many of us have worked on UGC projects and we’d be more than happy to explain to you why we’ve advanced past the concept. What we’ve found is that UGC cannot replace the reliable content produced by professionals. The time and place for UGC are for small simple asks like writting a Twitter or stanfing next to a lightning strike with your camera pointed directly at it as you are pushing the button. In both instances, getting gold out of those two scenarios, while certainly possible, we would not advise you to bet your entire campaign on that unlikelihood.

What do you charge?

All of our projects are custom built. Accordingly, so is our pricing.

Is IB5k User Generated Content?

In two words: Hell no. In many circles lately, UGC has gotten a bad rap. In the other ones, the bad word hasn’t gotten there yet becuase so many places have either been cheating or drastically taking advantage of honest hard working people who just haven’t gotten their big break yet.
